THE ROLE OF RULE OF LAW IN POLICE BRUTALITY.
RULE
OF LAW AND ITS ROLE IN POLICE BRUTALITY.
The law is for everyone and not for particular
set of people. The law is meant to be obeyed, respected and trusted not the
other way round. In Nigeria, the law is imposed and forced on people who cannot
oppose or say no to it. These people cannot question high authorities when
treated differently. It is so appalling that we find ourselves in such a
situation. High government officials cannot be questioned why? The Police
cannot be questioned, why? Are they trying to say some people are above the
law? Or are they saying that some people are saints? Thousands of questions run
through the minds of a lot of people, but most cannot voice out and say what
they think. Some think right away they will be punished, some even think it may
result to their death. THE QUESTION OF
EQUALITY BEFORE THE LAW.
When
the law talks about equality it simply means that nobody is above the law. It
means everybody can be questioned for crimes they commit; it means the police
have no right to determine someone’s fate but only the law has the capacity to
do that. It means no citizen should be caused to under go inhuman treatment that most times end up as
death cases. The rule of law has an important role to play in police brutality:
·
If the law is considered to be the
highest that is, the supreme power being the law, then no police officer will have the
capacity or right to walk over a civilian. Supremacy of the law is a key thing
to handling brutality in Nigeria.
·
Respect for fundamental human right; a
lot of human right activist have spoken about this and no one wants to listen.
The right of every Nigerian has to be respected and not just over looked.
This is because this forms the basis
for living. When you know you have rights backing you up. Most times in
Nigeria, the police forget the fundamental rights of Nigerians and tend to act otherwise,
violating Nigerians of their rights.
We are not going to sit down and watch innocent
lives taken away daily by careless acts of the Nigerian Police Force. It’s high
time the killings of young, old, poor and average civilians come to an end.
In our last article were we spoke on different cases
of brutality in Nigeria, one would discover that the police have gone to an
extreme now, treating people like they have the power to give and take lives.
Its high time we spoke out on these brutal killings and save our generation.
we can stop police brutality if we know our rights and we stand for it.
